I’ve been here once before. On the unemployment line. Taking the handout. Refusing the hand up. Riding it out to see where I land. Last time I enjoyed them SNAP steaks. This time I’ll just try to relax.
Pete and I lived in a “food desert” in Chicago. Although shortly after we moved, they opened, ironically, a “Pete’s Fresh Market” about a block from our old apartment. But back then we travelled a couple of miles to find the nearest Jewell-Osco. Or, colloquially, “Da nearest Jewells over by dere.” By contrast, Stephanie and I’s first apartment was across the street from da Jewells.
Fareway, Hy-Vee, Super-Valu. Hinky Pinky, Winn-Dixie. Food-4-Less. Super Saver, Russ’s Market, Shop-N-Save. Publix. Handy Pantry. Dominic’s, Jewell-Osco, Mariano’s. Cermak Produce. Tony’s Fresh Market. Ed’s Way. Smith’s, Macey’s, Harmon’s.
Funny. Feels like there should be a Kroger in there somewhere.
